The Municipality of Paralimniu-Derynia within the framework of improving the lifesaving capacity of the teams allocated by the Provincial Administration to cover the beaches of the Municipality decided to integrate the personnel of the marine sports companies wishing to assist in the rescue of people in danger in the area where they are based or near it under the coordination of Lifeguards who perform duties in the nearest lifeguard tower.
To this end, a memorandum of cooperation was signed today by the Mayor of Paralimniu - Deryneia Mr. George Nicolettos and the owners of water sports based on the beaches, wishing to set the framework for their cooperation in cases of emergency for rescue of bathers in danger in this or nearby marine area. The memorandum of cooperation was voluntarily signed by the marine sports companies, which are ready to assist in the rescue of bathers on the organised beaches of the municipality without any compensation. The water sports personnel will respond to assist in the rescue of a swimmer after being called by the lifeguard of the nearest lifeguard tower on the beach where the water sports company is located.
The memorandum of cooperation was prepared by retired Rear Admiral Kostas Fytiri, a search and rescue specialist who was the author of the national plan "SALAMIS" which is applied on the beaches of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Mayor of Paralimniu - Derynia thanked the owners of sea sports for their willingness to sign the memorandum of cooperation and as he said "according to the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue and ethics all citizens should assist in saving human life if they have the knowledge and ability to do so".
