Participation of the Municipality of Paralimni–Deryneia in the EcoMedislands Program

The Municipality of Paralimni–Deryneia is a proud partner of EcoMedIslands, a transnational project co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Euro-MED Program that brings together coastal and island regions from across the Mediterranean, with the aim of addressing one of their most significant shared challenges: waste prevention and management.

Starting at the top of the waste hierarchy, the project promotes responsible consumption, waste reduction at the source, and awareness-raising through the active participation of local communities. At the same time, new recycling infrastructure will help reduce reliance on landfilling in all pilot areas.

Real-time sensors monitor the fill levels of the bins, while artificial intelligence optimizes collection routes based on actual waste generation patterns, minimizing unnecessary trips, reducing costs, and lowering carbon dioxide emissions.

Each pilot project tests innovative methods in practice before they are implemented on a larger scale. The initiatives are designed as replicable models so that practices proven effective in one region can be adopted in other parts of the Mediterranean.

Through behavior-change campaigns, the active involvement of stakeholders, and the development of policy recommendations, EcoMedIslands seeks to bring about a long-term change in the way residents, businesses, and visitors perceive and manage waste.

Total budget: €3,974,970.00
Project duration: 45 months
